How to kill carpenter ants?

Found 2 entry ways into the house, and tried killing them before
with maxie force gel and anit bait gradulars, but they seem to come back every spring. Is there a home remedy that might work? Iv’e heard about sugar and borax mixed together, but not sure of the percentages of each, or should it be a honey mixture. Also should the sugar be watered down, or use it dry with the borax.
