but they fly…Size about that of the carpenter ant thinner and have long narrow wings….resemble that of a sst airplane but on a very small scale…..do they eat wood(specially if it is wet)…my question really is what type of ant are they…and what does it take to get rid of them…I live in central florida…
I need to find an ant for a biology assignment. I have looked nearby my apartment, wooded areas on campus… I can’t find a darn carpenter ant! I’m only finding the small ones… does anyone know where I can find these seemingly elusive ants? I would totally appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

I tried a liquid Ortho carpenter ant insecticide that was advertised as "kills on contact" but reading the small print one must deduce that living trees are absent from the ants’ menu. Powder insecticides appear to be the researched response. I would appreciate any suggestions re: a brand -name powdered insecticide and its application because the ones in Home Depot seem to have the consistency of baking flour which will "blow in the wind" = please no Ortho products
I think, let me know if I have mis-ID’d them. In any case, there were two pockets of mini swarms jsut outside my adirondack cottage door. Which is made of wood. Which made my parents quite concerned. don’t ask em what happened next… at least I had time to shoot the video.
Only saw a few ants, but I’ve killed hundreds of larvae. They don’t seem to be near food, just underneath stuff, especially paper. They seem to appear out of nowhere as well. I don’t know if it is fly larvae and the ants were eating it or if it is the carpenter ant larvae. If it’s the carpenter ant larvae, why are they on my floor? why not in their nest? Help please. Thanks.
Field ants are large ants (3/8 inch), often mistaken for Carpenter ants. Field ants are robust and can be brown, tan, reddish, or red and black in color. Field ants are rarely found indoors, they nest in the soil. In open fields, they may make mounds. In lawns, the nests have a low profile, rarely reaching above the top of the grass. Field ants displace a lot of displaced soil. **The ant nest in this clip covers an area of about 2 ft in a lawn and there are lots of things going on. Ants carrying plant materials, birds in the background (you can easily hear the chiminey swifts) and a small spiderling makes its debut at about 0:03:37.30 **For more information on field ants and their management, visit lancaster.unl.edu
