What to do about termites

We just found out that we have termites. We have a 99 yr old house & just painted, not sided (not sure if that matters). Saw termites in a few different places tonight. We need to be doing some deck work soon & hubby is afraid of stirring up a nest.
Would it be best to call an exterminator or are there ways to get rid of them and their nests (if they have them) by ourselves?
Any info would be great!!
