Get Rid of Carpenter Ants

We have just discovered fire ants moving into our backyard, and we need them gone. We have a border collie who uses the backyard as a bathroom and generally just loves to roam, play, and sunbathe there. Obviously, the fire ants are not only dangerous to us, but to her as well.

Is there a product or a method of killing fire ants that will be safe for our dog? Someone bought ant killer bait, but it’s not safe for pets and I just don’t feel comfortable with using it at all.
