Why are there suddenly a bunch of "carpenter ants" outside my backyard?

Why are there suddenly a bunch of "carpenter ants" outside my backyard?

There were none this morning, and all of the sudden they’re in my backyard (A LOT of them!). I’m really sure they aren’t termites, because they looks like enlarged ants with wings on them, so I’m guessing they are carpenter ants. Does this mean they have a nest in my home? Or are they something else?
We live in California, and so it’s very hot and dry here. We’ve never had floods, and it doesn’t get moist around here.
